If you use your Metrobank credit card to load up your Maya wallet or pay bills through PayNow, two fee changes are coming that directly affect your transactions — and they kick in less than two months from now.
Metrobank officially announced the following updates effective August 15, 2026.
Change 1 — Quasi-Cash Fee on Maya Transactions
Starting August 15, a 5% Quasi-Cash fee will be charged on the transaction amount every time you use your Metrobank credit card for Maya 'Cash In' and 'Add Money' transactions.
To illustrate exactly what this means using Metrobank's own example:
Maya Cash In amount: ₱2,000.00
Quasi-Cash fee (5%): ₱100.00
Total charge on your card: ₱2,100.00
In plain terms: if you load ₱2,000 to your Maya wallet using your Metrobank credit card, you will be charged ₱100 extra on top of the loading amount — automatically, every time.
Metrobank has also noted that similar merchants may be added to the Quasi-Cash category in the future as they expand and update their offerings. Any additions will be announced through Metrobank's official channels.
What is a Quasi-Cash fee and why does it matter?
Quasi-Cash is a banking classification for transactions that are treated similarly to cash advances — including loading e-wallets, buying gaming credits, and similar activities. Banks charge a Quasi-Cash fee because these transactions do not carry the usual merchant processing margin that regular retail purchases do.
This is not unique to Metrobank — other Philippine banks have similar Quasi-Cash policies. What matters is that starting August 15, Maya loading via Metrobank cards now falls squarely under this classification.
Change 2 — PayNow Processing Fee Increase
Metrobank's PayNow processing fee — used for bill payments via credit card — is being updated from:
Current: ₱25 or up to 1.5% of the transaction amount, whichever is higher
New (effective August 15): ₱25 or up to 1.65% of the transaction amount, whichever is higher
The increase is 0.15 percentage points — modest on small transactions but more noticeable on larger bill payments. For a ₱10,000 utility or tuition bill payment, the processing fee moves from a maximum of ₱150 to a maximum of ₱165. For a ₱50,000 payment, it moves from ₱750 to ₱825.
What you should do before August 15:
If you regularly load Maya using your Metrobank card — consider switching to a different funding source. Loading Maya via your bank account directly (through InstaPay) costs significantly less than the new 5% Quasi-Cash fee. The Quasi-Cash fee will apply to the loading transaction itself, not to purchases you make using the Maya balance you already loaded.
If you pay bills via PayNow — the fee increase is small per transaction, but if you pay multiple large bills monthly through PayNow, it adds up over the year. Evaluate whether paying directly through your biller's website or via other channels carries a lower processing fee.
