What makes a credit card useful for online shopping?
Rewards are worth considering, but they are not the only feature that matters when choosing a shopping card.
Security. Credit cards offer ways to dispute unauthorized transactions, while issuers may use one-time passwords and other authentication measures to help protect cardholders. Some cards also offer purchase protection for eligible transactions.
Ease of use. A credit card lets you pay for a purchase now and settle the bill later. Installment options can also help spread the cost of larger purchases, provided the payments fit your budget.
Wide acceptance. Visa and Mastercard are accepted by many online merchants, although acceptance depends on the payment options available at checkout.
Rewards and perks. Depending on the card, your spending can earn cashback, points, air miles, or shopping credits. Some cards also offer discounts, vouchers, and other shopping benefits.
Reasonable spending requirements. Check the minimum spend needed to earn rewards or qualify for a welcome offer. A perk is less useful if it encourages you to buy things you do not need.
Customer service. Responsive support can help when you need to dispute a transaction, resolve a payment concern, or address a problem with your card.
Seven cards to match different shopping habits
Each card below has a different rewards structure, so consider which benefits align with purchases you already make.
Metrobank World Mastercard
Shoppers who also travel may prefer a card that earns air miles. The Metrobank World Mastercard awards one air mile for every ₱17 spent on online purchases, foreign-currency transactions, and hotel spending. Other purchases earn one air mile per ₱50.
Its foreign-exchange rate is 1.85%, and its airline partners include Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, and Philippine Airlines. Cardholders can convert 10,000 points into 4,000 air miles.
Airport lounge access is another feature. The card comes with free unlimited access to PAGSS airport lounges, plus two complimentary lounge visits per year through Mastercard Travel Pass.
For shoppers who also value travel rewards, these features offer another way to get value from eligible spending.
EastWest Visa Platinum
For shoppers who spend across several everyday categories, the EastWest Visa Platinum offers 8.88% cashback on online shopping, dining, travel, fuel, and utilities.
Other spending earns 0.3% cashback. The cashback is capped at ₱1,250 per month, or ₱15,000 per year.
The card may appeal to people who want cashback across a mix of online purchases and other regular expenses, rather than rewards tied to just one type of shopping.
HSBC Live+ Visa Signature
For people whose budgets include dining, shopping, entertainment, and travel, the HSBC Live+ Visa Signature offers cashback across several categories.
Cardholders earn 8% cashback on dining, 5% on shopping, entertainment, and travel, 2% on fast food, and 0.2% on other categories. Cashback is capped at up to ₱22,200 per year.
The card also has a KKB-exclusive no-annual-fee-for-life offer until October 31, 2026. To qualify, applicants must spend ₱60,000 within 60 days.
That welcome offer has a substantial spending requirement, so it is worth checking whether your planned expenses can meet the threshold without stretching your budget.
Chinabank Cash Rewards Mastercard
The Chinabank Cash Rewards Mastercard has different cashback rates depending on where you spend.
Cardholders can earn 6% cashback on spending outside grocery, gas, and drugstore categories, subject to a minimum spend of ₱1,000. Gas and drugstore purchases earn 1% cashback with a ₱1,000 minimum spend, while grocery purchases earn 1% cashback with a ₱5,000 minimum spend.
Cashback is capped at ₱1,000 per month.
Since the qualifying minimum spend varies by category, shoppers should check whether their usual purchases meet the requirements before counting on the cashback.
Chinabank @home Visa Platinum
Shopping benefits can also extend to household and family expenses. The Chinabank @home Visa Platinum offers cashback of up to ₱1,500 per statement cycle, along with 5% family cashback.
It also offers 0% installment on school and medical expenses, exclusive family promotional deals, and a complimentary ₱4,000 SM Supermarket e-voucher welcome gift after spending ₱8,000 within 60 days.
Families who need supplementary cards can also take advantage of no annual fees for up to 10 supplementary cardholders.
These features may be useful for households managing shared expenses, particularly when school and medical bills are part of their regular spending.
UnionBank Lazada Mastercard
Frequent Lazada shoppers can earn Lazada Credits directly through their spending with the UnionBank Lazada Mastercard.
Cardholders earn six Lazada Credits for every ₱200 spent on Lazada purchases and bills, while other spending earns one Lazada Credit per ₱200.
The card also offers free shipping, sale vouchers, and access to Mega Sale events. These perks are particularly relevant to shoppers who regularly use Lazada and can make use of its platform-specific benefits.
RCBC ZALORA Mastercard
For shoppers who frequently buy fashion online, the RCBC ZALORA Mastercard offers 6% cashback on ZALORA with no minimum spend.
A 2% cashback on other online purchases is available for a ₱10,000 minimum non-online spend.
₱5,000 ZALORA Credits are also available after ₱30,000 spend within 60 days from card delivery. Plus, customers get VIP access to ZALORA's exclusive sales, events, and brand launches.
All cashback is subject to a ₱1,000 monthly cap and must be accumulated on the card upon redemption
The card's ZALORA credits and shipping benefits may be particularly relevant to shoppers who already buy from the platform and can use the rewards.
Choose the card that fits your actual spending
The most rewarding card depends on where your money already goes. Frequent online shoppers may prefer cashback or platform-specific credits, while travelers may value air miles and lounge access.
Households may find family cashback and installment options more useful than a higher rewards rate in a single category.
Before applying, compare the rewards caps, minimum spending requirements, welcome-offer conditions, and benefits you can realistically use.
Most importantly, do not spend extra just to earn rewards. A shopping card is most useful when it rewards purchases you already planned and when you can pay your credit card bill on time.
