Planning a long-weekend getaway? Fuel costs can add up, especially when the trip involves long drives, toll fees, and multiple stops along the way.
Some credit cards offer fuel rebates or cashback, while others extend rewards to toll loads, auto services, and travel expenses. Here are eight cards worth checking before your next road trip, along with their rewards, caps, and key conditions.
1. EastWest Visa Platinum
EastWest Visa Platinum offers 8.88% cash rewards on eligible Travel and Fuel purchases. The same rate applies to eligible spending at dining establishments, department stores, select online stores, and utilities.
Other eligible purchases earn 0.3% cash rewards. However, all earning categories share a ₱1,250 cash rewards cap per billing cycle, so cardholders should consider how quickly their combined spending may reach the limit.
Rewards can be redeemed starting at ₱500. Merchant-category rules determine whether a transaction qualifies.
2. Metrobank Toyota Platinum Mastercard
The Metrobank Toyota Platinum Mastercard offers a 3% rebate on eligible fuel purchases and toll-app top-ups, making it worth considering for drivers who regularly pay for fuel and road tolls.
The card also provides a 10% discount on eligible genuine Toyota parts, accessories, and labor. Cardholders can earn two points per ₱20 spent at a nominated Toyota dealer through Metrobank POS.
Fuel and toll rebates share a ₱1,250 monthly cap and a ₱15,000 annual cap. Toyota discounts are subject to vehicle-ownership and transaction exclusions, while dealer points require nomination and payment through Metrobank POS.
3. Chinabank @home Visa Platinum
The Chinabank @home Visa Platinum offers 5% cashback on qualified purchases, including eligible fuel spending.
Its total cashback is capped at ₱1,500 per statement cycle across all eligible categories. Cardholders should account for this shared cap when comparing the card's rewards with those of other options.
Some transactions do not qualify, including installments, auto-debit or auto-charge transactions, and purchases at wholesale or warehouse merchants, among other exclusions.
4. Chinabank Platinum Mastercard and Chinabank World Mastercard
Both the Chinabank Platinum Mastercard and Chinabank World Mastercard offer a 5% rebate on qualified fuel purchases at local gas stations.
The rebate is capped at ₱250 per fuel transaction and ₱500 per cycle month. This means the advertised rate does not guarantee the same savings on every fill-up, particularly for larger purchases.
The benefit applies only to private-use local fuel purchases. A single fuel receipt exceeding ₱20,000 does not qualify for a rebate.
5. UnionBank Shell Power Visa Platinum
The UnionBank Shell Power Visa Platinum offers a 5% rebate on qualified Shell fuel purchases, eligible toll loads, auto repairs, accessories, and services.
The card has a combined rebate cap of ₱15,000 per calendar year. Unlike some cards with spending conditions, the Platinum version has no monthly out-of-store spending requirement.
Transactions must still meet the applicable conditions for cashier terminals, merchant descriptions, and merchant categories.
6. Petron BPI Card
The Petron BPI Card offers a 3% rebate on eligible Petron fuel purchases, with fuel rebates of up to ₱15,000 per year.
The benefit is limited to eligible Petron stations and fuel purchases. Non-fuel transactions and purchases made outside the eligible Petron network do not earn fuel rebates.
Drivers who regularly fill up at participating Petron stations may find this card worth comparing with other fuel-reward options.
7. HSBC Live+ Visa Signature
The HSBC Live+ Visa Signature offers a 3% fuel rebate at participating Caltex stations, capped at ₱600 per calendar month.
The card also offers up to 8% cashback on eligible dining purchases and up to 5% on eligible travel purchases. Both dining and travel benefits require at least ₱10,000 in spending per statement cycle, and they share a separate ₱1,250 Live+ cashback cap per statement cycle.
Fuel purchases do not earn the card's regular Live+ cashback, so cardholders should distinguish the fuel rebate from the card's other rewards.
How to choose a card for your next road trip
The highest advertised rebate rate does not automatically translate to the biggest savings. A card's actual value depends on how much a cardholder spends, where the card is used, and whether the transaction qualifies for rewards.
Before using a card for a long-weekend getaway, check the following:
Rebate caps. A high percentage may be less valuable once the monthly, billing-cycle, or annual cap is reached.
Eligible fuel stations. Some cards are tied to particular fuel brands or participating locations.
Other spending conditions. Certain benefits require minimum spending or specific payment channels.
Annual fees and interest. These costs can reduce the value of rewards, particularly when balances are not paid in full.
The best card depends on the driver's usual fuel station, spending habits, and ability to meet the card's conditions. Reviewing the current terms before leaving can help cardholders make better use of the rewards available to them.
Note: This guide covers selected features, not a complete fee comparison. Eligibility, merchant categories, rebate caps, and redemption rules apply. Confirm current terms with the issuing bank.
